Afghan journalists reporting from the frontline

IMS supports Afghan journalists operating in Taleban territory in Helmand, Afghanistan. In a joint project with Institute for War and Peace Reporting, IMS supports training in personal safety and journalism skills, and runs a media centre in the heart of the Taleban stronghold

Intimidation and death threats against journalists and their families have become commonplace in Helmand; not just from Taleban militants, but also from warlords, drug barons, and even corrupt government officials and police, who do not want the media spotlight on their activities. The journalists in Helmand routinely face threats; hence the importance of ensuring better working conditions for the journalists and setting up a safety and protection mechanism for the media workers in Afghanistan.

IMS works in Helmand training journalists in basic safety skills and is funding a media center in Lashkar Gah within the frameworks of the joint IMS/IWPR Editorial mentoring and news production for Afghan journalists project. This is part of the larger scale IMS project Enhancing Media Safety and Journalistic Professionalism in Afghanistan 2009-2010.

Currently 32 journalists are linked to the Lashkar Gah media center and some of them are producing articles which are published on the IMS and IWPR websites. Also, the centre hosts the headquarters of the Helmand Journalists’ Independent Association, which was created in 2008.

The stories provided by the local journalists offer a unique angle and insight into the conflict as percieved and reported on by Afghan media.
