"We thought that we in the Arab world were the only ones encountering serious problems when but here in Lillehammer we have noticed that reporters elsewhere also run into serious problems carrying out investigative reporting".
This is one of many issues that became clear when Fatima Reda and Rana Najjar from Beirut attended the Global Conference for Investigative Journalism in Lillehammer.
Over 500 reporters from all corners of the world gathered in Norway to discuss a broad variety of issues related to investigative journalism. Fatima and Rana were to members of the Arab delegation, that all belong to the organisation Arij, supported by IMS.
Rana points out that although the journalistic tradition in the Arab world differs somewhat from the practices in the west she has been able to attend many inspiring sessions. Learning from how other reporters work has been the highlights of the conference for her.
For both Fatima and Rana it is the first time they attend a conference of this magnitude and Fatima tells that she has met a number of colleagues that she will now stay in touch with via email. One thing that she will bring back to Beirut with her is the need for patience when working on an investigation - a well done job will most likely demand both patience and time.
"Learning from others with extensive experience gives me hope for the future - I hope that I will become a good investigative reporter at some point", she adds with a smile.
