More than 80 media professionals and representatives public and private organizations had come to the Azerbaijan Media Merkezi - as the media centre is called in Azerbaijani - to see the new premises. Also the logo of the new institution and information material was revealed along with the plans for the future of the centre.
The centre, which is set up by IMS, strives to bring people and resources together, in order to provide a "centre of excellence and innovation" for media development in Azerbaijan, which may serve to inspire the ongoing media development in the country. Building on key values - credibility, neutrality, relevance to the media sector - should help fulfil this goal.
The media centre plans to organize weekly debates and press club meetings, offer resources to journalists for investigations and host press conferences and round table discussions. Moreover, the centre will offer professional training in journalism, media relations and public information.
According to project manager Elshad Farzaliyev, who is in charge of daily operations of the centre, the Azerbaijan Media Merkezi meets a growing need to have a central meeting place for journalists, editors, managers, spokespersons, PR-professionals and politicians. He mentioned that the centre will offer professional training and provide resources such as access to databases and subscriptions to international publications, to strengthen fact-based reporting. He also announced the start of weekly debates and press club meetings about a variety of topics relevant to society.
At the opening, Yasha Lange, programme manager of IMS, gave a variety of examples from other countries to illustrate the relevance of media centres in different countries.
- Evidently, media centres have proven their value as a neutral and credible place for professionals to get training, discuss developments and make use of access to other journalistic tools, Yasha Lange said.
The Azerbaijan Media Centre is a project managed by IMS, as one component of the IMS Media Support programme within the Neighborhood Programme, which is funded by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
