Belarusian media activist joins Danish campaign for women

Editor-in-chief of CDMAG in Belarus Iryna Vidanava joins worldwide campaign initiated by the Danish Minister for Development Ulla Tørnæs to promote women's rights
When accepting to joining this campaign, Iryna Vidanava, who is a partner to IMS in Belarus, pledged to dedicate time and efforts to raise awareness about women in Belarus who are imprisoned, expelled or fired due to their activities in Belarus. All of these women are risking their life and freedom in the fight for democracy in Belarus, and Iryna is planning an interview series with some of these women as well as to publish parts of the diaries of these women, as part of an awareness campaign about this marginalised group in Belarus.
Iryna Vidanava is also hoping to get help from her extensive network among international media and human rights organisations in order to disseminate the stories to a wider, international audience as part of a global awareness campaign in favour of marginalised women and the need for enhancing women's rights in society.
By engaging media as an important ally in promoting awareness about women's equal participation in society, Iryna may inspire other women around the world to form similar alliances with media.
In a ceremony at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Copenhagen on 25 June, Iryna Vidanava presented her commitments and received a torch, which was lit by head of Department at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Michael Zilmer-Johns.
As part of Denmark's commitment to meeting the Millennium Development Goals, agreed upon by world leaders at the UN Millennium Summit in 2000, Danish Minister for Development, Ulla Tørnæs launched a worldwide campaign to lobby support for goal number 3. MDG 3 sets time-bound targets to be met by 2015 aiming to secure equal rights for girls and women including women's participation in all aspects of society.
