This will be the first time since the armed conflict between Russia and Georgia over South Ossetia that media from the Caucasus region are coming together to discuss the role of the media in conflict situations. Around 25 journalists and editors will attend this seminar representing media from: Georgia, non-state South Ossetia, non-state Abkhazia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, un-recognized territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, Republic of North Ossetia, Republic of Dagestan, Republic of Karachay-Cherkessk and Russia.
The aim of the seminar is to provide the participants with a firmer grasp of how media outlets should conduct themselves during conflicts.
During the three days, the journalists and editors will be discussing editorial choices and freedom of expression with Flemming Rose - culture editor of the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten.
Andrei Babitskiy - Russian journalist at Radio Free Europe/ Radio Liberty - will talk about his experiences covering the second Chechen war. A panel of Ukrainian experts will discuss and answer questions about prevention of misunderstanding and hate speeches in the media.
By bringing media professionals together from the different regions in the Caucasus, and Russian Federation it is also envisaged that this may offer a fruitful framework for exchange of views between professional equals about the armed conflict in August, as well as the post-war situation.
It is also the hope that this seminar may contribute to laying the foundation for cooperation between media in the Caucasus and Russia thereby improving the knowledge base of the Caucasus media and thus limiting the scope for misconceptions and further divide between the peoples in this region.
The seminar will take place in Kyiv and is organized jointly by International Media Support and the Institute for War and Peace Reporting.
