Mexico

Between March 2006 and December 2007, at least 12 journalists were murdered in Mexico, while several others were harassed or threatened. This makes Mexico one of the most dangerous countries for journalists - especially for those who cover issues like corruption and drug-trafficking. IMS is engaging in strengthening the ability of media to minimize the risks and to develop press freedom and freedom of expression in close collaboration with national and international press freedom organisations.

Day of the Dead: Remembering Mexico's fallen journalists

02.11.2011 Share on facebook

In the last five years Mexico has seen 35 journalists murdered and eight gone missing. This year alone, nine journalists have been killed

On 2 November the international campaign Day of the Dead, organised by PEN International in collaboration with International Media Support, aims to focus public attention on the violence and impunity affecting the journalists and writers in Mexico.

Most of the Mexico's killed journalists have been involved in investigating corruption or reporting on organised crime, and were likely targeted because of their work. The majority of the killings and disappearances have not been properly investigated or punished, creating a climate of impunity and fear.

The Day of the Dead campaign takes place around the world on 2 November, a day where Mexicans traditionally commemorate their dead.

In Denmark, the campaign takes place in Copenhagen with a performance by the Mexican singer Edith Tamayo, and reading of Mexican poetry by actors Lene Vasegaard and Paul Hüttel. To join the campaign in Copenhagen and help raise awareness of the killings of Mexican journalists, come to:
