Earth Journalism Awards Ceremony, 14 December 2009

14.12.2009

15 journalists from around the world to be honoured for their environment stories at the Earth Journalism Awards on 14 December co-hosted by Nobel Peace prize winner Dr. Rajendra Pachauri

Journalists play a vital role in informing the world about the impact of climate change and so are helping to influence the negotiations at COP 15. Recognising their key contribution, Nobel Peace prize winner Dr. Rajendra Pachauri is co-hosting the Earth Journalism Awards with the international media development organiSation, Internews.

The awards honour those in the media (professional and citizen journalists/bloggers), who use their communication skills to produce powerful reports linked to issues at the heart of COP 15 - including REDD, CDM, Mitigation and Adaptation.  The 15 winning entries include a Kenyan group, who spread environmental information to their peers in the Nairobi slums through hip hop, a multimedia report from Brazil documenting how custom and responsible agriculture clash in the Amazonian rain forest, a compelling account of a small Pakistani community adapting to climate change, as well as other engaging pieces from a wide range of countries (http://awards.earthjournalism.org/finalists).

During the interactive ceremony, moderator, Lyse Doucet from BBC World Service will field questions from the audience (negotiators/reporters/ activists) to presenters including:

- Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, IPCC Chair
- Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary, UNFCCC
