IMS “Media and Dialogue” focus area aims at enhancing the space for freedom of expression and, through exchanges and collaboration between media professionals, to generate more nuanced media coverage in Denmark as well as the countries of cooperation.

The main program within this area is the regional “Media Cooperation Programme with the Arab World and Iran”. The overall strategy of this program is to establish maximum professional exchange between Arab, Iranian and Danish media actors through partnerships between local, regional and international colleagues that cooperate in order to development innovative media products and to enhance the professional potential of the media.

The media scene

In recent years, the media sector in the Arab world has witnessed dramatic changes. This development was propelled by the emergence of regional tv-satellite channels, as government-controlled media such as public broadcast tv who have traditionally monopolised the news media, suddenly saw regional satellite tv channels carving in on their audiences.

Easy access to low-cost, high-tech equipment for newspaper, radio and TV production combined with a growing confidence among journalists to challenge the prevailing situation has spiralled off an avalanche of new media outlets emerging in the Arab world including several independent newspapers, radio stations and internet-based media.
