Copenhagen is host to a seminar on “Freedom of Expression under Fire” between 24 - 30 October 2010, which aims to bring together prominent activists, journalists, and civil society leaders from Europe and the Middle East and North Africa
The organisers, which include Freedom House (US), Danish PEN, FriDebat, The Danish Institute for Human Rights and IMS, hope to engage the invitees in assessing the status of freedom of expression and to discuss religious expression and tolerance.
The seminar is organised following a worrisome declines in freedom of expression around the world in recent years.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights defines freedom of expression as the right of every individual to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers. In practice, this fundamental human right is frequently restricted, through tactics that include censorship, legislation limiting the ability of media outlets to report on events, and harassment of civil society activists, journalists, bloggers and others who voice their opinions.
In response to the growing crackdown on freedom of expression, Freedom House has initiated a multi-faceted freedom of expression campaign to defend this critical right. Freedom House works to resist efforts to restrict existing norms protecting freedom of expression, including efforts to create international legal mechanisms banning language deemed “defamatory of religions.”
In connection with the Seminar, Freedom House states that:
- Within individual countries, this campaign supports efforts by local free expression advocates to oppose or to overturn media laws that restrict the ability of journalists to cover crucial issues, including through criminal insult, defamation, and libel laws. The campaign also seeks to provide more in-depth information and analysis of particular challenges facing freedom of expression.
IMS and a number of its partners in the MENA region will contribute with expert input during the seminar on topics such as legal restrictions to freedom of expression (Rana Sabbagh, Executive Director of ARIJ); what can Europe do to support freedom of expression in the Arab world (Jesper Højberg, Executive Director IMS and Michael Irving Jensen, IMS) as well as Internet freedom and cyber activism in the Arab world (Torben Brandt, IMS).
During the first three days of the seminar, meetings are only open to invited participants. Please contact PEN for further information. On Thursday 28 October, the seminar will conclude in an open session for the general public between 13:30-15:30 in the main auditorium at DIIS, Strandgade 71 (for more information, please contact the Danish Institute for Human Rights).
