Yemen Times, the only English-language newspaper in Yemen, and the only newspaper in the region with a female editor, faces imminent bankruptcy. Advertising revenue is the greatest source of income for Yemen Times and in line with most of the other countries in the region, the ads are mainly placed by the state. In an interview with International Media Support, the female editor in chief of Yemen Times called for help from the international community to save her paper from closing.
- If we do not obtain the necessary funds here and now, we will not last more than a month, the owner and chief editor of Yemen Times, Nadia Al-Sakkaf, told IMS in an interview in April.
- Because of the recent protests, the number of ads has fallen so dramatically that we have had to halve the number of pages in our newspaper from 16 to eight.
The goal of the fundraising campaign launched by Politiken in cooperation with IMS is to secure the survival of Yemen Times, one of the few, but important voices representing the views in favour of reform.
In Yemen, the young are eager to be heard in the same way as in Egypt, Tunisia and Syria after 30 years of autocratic rule under the current president Saleh, They want reform and a change to be part of decisionmaking about Yemen's future. Half of Yemen's population is under the age of 16 - the lowest in the Arab world.
