The Afghan documentary "The Fixer" was screened at the CPH:DOX festival in Copenhagen this week. In connection with his visit to Copenhagen, Barry Salaam met with IMS to share his thoughts about the situation engulfing media in today's Afghanistan

Media coverage in war zones often happens under life-threathening circumstances. Often the main focus is on the dangers facing reporters representing international news agencies. What is less known to the public is the fate of the local journalists who are the precondition for enabling international reporters to report from foreign war zones.

"The Fixer"

The documentary film "Fixer: The taking of Ajmal Naqsbandi" tells the story of the Afghan journalist Ajmal Naqsbandi who in 2007 worked for an Italian media coeporation as a "fixer" - the term used for local journalists who help international media. The Italian reporter and Ajmal Naqsbandi were kidnapped by Taliban. The Italian reporter was released following heavy pressure from the international community and the italian authorities. Ajmal Naqsbandi, however, was left with his captives who later executed him.

The film offers a rare insight into the news hunt along the frontlines of the world of today. During his visit to Copenhagen, IMS WEB asked Barry Salaam, why the documentary included footage showing some very violent scenes of Taliban beheading captives.
