IMS was one of the few media organisations to rapidly respond to a massacre of journalists in 2009 on the Philippine island of Mindanao. Since then, IMS has dedicated on-the-ground services and resources to the protection and safety of journalists in the country.  IMS quickly established a safety office on Mindanao and continues advocacy in concert with other media organisations by  pushing for long-term legislative reform and organizing campaigns against impunity.

IMS to manage safety funds for Danish Union of Journalists

The Danish Union of Journalists has appointed IMS as a main partner in their work to strengthen the safety of journalists around the world. IMS will be managing funds previously channeled through the International Federation of Journalists Safety Fund

The Danish Union of Journalists has decided to discontinue their support of persecuted journalists through the International Federation of Journalists' (IFJ) Safety Fund. Instead, the money will be channeled through IMS to ensure the safety of media around the world. The announcement was made on the Danish Union of Journalist's website following the Union's annual meeting for delegates on 13 - 14 April.

For decades, the International Federation of Journalists has received close to half a million DKK (96,400 USD) annually from the 15,000 members of the Danish Union of Journalists to help journalists working in dangerous environments.

The money has been reallocated, according to the Danish Union of Journalists' website, because the Union want greater security in terms of how the money is used. Only a small part of the funds allocated so far were actually spent and therefore did not reach the intended recipients, according to the Danish Union of Journalists.

IMS has a strong track record of working for the safety of journalists in countries such as Afghanistan, the Philippines and Sri Lanka. Read about IMS' work to strengthen the safety of journalists here.
