IMS and partners mark World Press Freedom Day, 3 May, with a debate on access to information in Jordan, where media are assessing their role in light of the political changes sweeping through the region

World Press Freedom Day is an opportunity to highlight the situation of media and journalists around the world. On this day in Amman, national and international media experts from organisations such as UNESCO and Arab Reporters for Investigative Reporters will debate the issue of freedom of access to information in Jordan.

Jordanian media has traditionally been under tight state control, but the media environment has steadily diversified over the past few years and different mediums have achieved varying levels of press freedom.

However, Ms. Rana Sabbagh, Executive Director of the IMS-founded Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism network and a panelist in the debate today, much remains to be done. Quoted in the Jordan Times issue of 29 April 2011, she says that she believes "journalists have not fought for their freedom as they should."

"Journalism is a sacred profession, it is a reporter's duty to defend freedom. If all editors stand united against interference in their work, it is bound to stop," she said, adding that local journalists need to "put their own house in order".
