Since an earthquake shook major cities in Haiti on 12 January and destroyed houses, lives and livelihoods for millions of Haitians, international relief agencies have taken action to come to the rescue of the inhabitants. Still, eight days after the disaster, media reports from the disaster area tell stories of bottlenecks in relief efforts and of continuing suffering of the people of Haiti.
This week, IMS is sending a team to Haiti to assist in ensuring that information on where to find food, water, shelter and medical assistance reaches those who need it. The IMS Haiti Response Team is coordinating activities with other international media support organisations.
While in Haiti, the IMS Haiti Response Team will establish contact with local media and humanitarian organisations to offer immediate assistance, while at the same time assessing the need for further assistance in consultation with local media and international organisations.
IMS has long-standing experience in supporting local and national media in countries affected by conflict and humanitarian crises. We help ensure that the production of reliable news by local media continues in a professional manner and that information reaches the population in the affected area.
Furthermore, IMS has developed expertise in developing a special system for providing humanitarian information in disaster areas. This system builds on national media as conveyers of life-saving information to victims of disaster – as well as securing that vital information on how crises develop is brought to the attention of the international relief organisations through existing news channels.
Robert Shaw from IMS’ Media and Conflict Unit will travel to Haiti on Friday, 22 January, followed on Saturday by Anne Poulsen, who has previous working experience in Haiti as a communications officer for World Food Programme. Peter Bastian Halberg, who will be the coordinator of IMS Haiti Response Team, will follow soon after.
The IMS Haiti Response Team will also include CartONG, a humanitarian mapping NGO that will assist IMS with mapping and data analysis of the current state of the communication infrastructure in Haiti. Also, the mobile company NOKIA may join IMS on the ground as part of their response to improve mobile phone communication in Haiti during this time of crisis.
