Commencing in January, the AMC provides space and services for media and civil society via IRFS, in parallel to IRFS' larger programme to promote freedom of expression in Azerbaijan.
Since its establishment in October 2008, the Azerbaijan Media Center has welcomed around 15,000 people, hosted more than 600 events, and organised 40 debates and 30 public discussions on subjects of social relevance and press freedom.
The AMC has enabled the production of internet TV and produced more than 30 real time internet debates, organised more than 20 training sessions, of which more than half were facilitated by senior international experts.
In line with IMS' original plan for local ownership of the center by Azerbaijani media, the AMC will vacate its current location and merge with the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety, a relatively young but rapidly growing media organisation. Within only a few years, IRFS has grown from being a media watchdog NGO to a savvy and proactive organisation with a holistic approach toward the development of independent media in Azerbaijan.
This exciting merger will expand the range of services available to Azerbaijani media and civil society, as well as creating additional synergies for the promotion of free and independent press in the country.
For more information about the merger, please contact IMS Azerbaijan Project Manager Gulnara Akhundova at ga[snabela]i-m-s.dk. See also the websites of AMC and IRFS for more information on the two organisations and the merger.
