When Sudanese citizens in Northern as well as Southern Sudan went to the polls in April 2010 to elect their new leader, media in Sudan played an important role in following the campaign trails of the candidates and publish information, which enabled voters to make informed choices on election day.
Ahead of elections, IMS in collaboration with five other national and international organisations, ran a series of activities to support Sudanese media in their strive for professional reporting during the election period. Activities included monitoring of media coverage of the election as well as in-house training through mentorships of media in Northern Sudan as well as in the southern part of the country.
The film, produced by IMS and directed and edited by Mia Bittar, shares some unique moments of the first nation-wide election in Sudan and tells the human story of a people who are casting their vote in a democratic process for the first time in their lives.
Besides IMS, The Sudan Media and Elections Consortium (SMEC) includes Sudanese Development Initiative (SUDIA), Fojo Media Institute, Norwegian Peoples Aid (NPA), Osservatorio di Pavia and Arab Working Group for Media Monitoring (AWG). The election support program was funded by UNDP.
