Sudanese media’s coverage of the country's elections in April 2010 was characterised by a generally restrained use of violence-inciting hate-speech

This is one of the conclusions of the final media monitoring report presenting an overview of Sudanese media’s election coverage during the campaign period between 13 February– 6 June 2010.

The nationwide elections in Sudan in April 2010 presented media with the task of delivering accurate and neutral information to the people of Sudan. Although coverage in both print and electronic media was largely biased in favour of the two leading parties, NCP in the north and Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) in Southern Sudan, the elections were covered in great detail and space was allocated to the voices of people on the street -  the voters.

Monitoring of the media's post-election coverage in Sudan continues. Here is the first media monitoring news letter providing an overview of the media's news agenda in the week 26 July to 2 August 2010.

Background

To give Sudanese media an opportunity to reflect on their election coverage, International Media Support (IMS) and five partner national and international organisations trained local monitors to assess and analyse coverage of both print and electronic media during the campaign period.

The Sudan Media and Elections project is implemented by the Sudan Media and Elections Consortium (SMEC), a group of national and international organisations with expertise in media support. The SMEC carries out media monitoring of four TV stations, seventeen radio channels and thirteen newspapers in Sudan on a daily basis.
