Sri Lanka

Since 2005 the conditions of violence and impunity has made life increasingly dangerous for media practitioners in Sri Lanka. In response to this situation, IMS is seeking to help provide rapid response to journalists at risk. In October 2006 and June 2007, IMS coordinated international advocacy and safety missions to Sri Lanka to bring international attention to the situation in the country, as well as to support the national media community.

Call for UN to help find missing Sri Lankan journalist

08.03.2011 Share on facebook

More than a year after the disappearance of Prageeth Eknelygoda, a Sri Lankan political columnist and cartoonist, his wife has yet to receive any information about his whereabouts from the Sri Lankan authorities

In an open letter to Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, five international media organisations including International Media Support, express their concern for the lack of progress in the investigation of his disappearance and urge the UN to act in accordance with its human rights mandate.

Prageeth Eknelygoda disappeared on January 24, 2010. Since then, his wife, Sandhya Eknelygoda, has been asking the Sri Lankan government for any information about his fate.  Prageeth Eknelygoda, a well-known and well-published columnist and cartoonist in the media community, is also reputed for his contribution to the news website Lanka e News, whose premises were burnt to the ground on 31 January 2011. Prageeth Eknelygoda may be the latest victim in the continuingly troubling media situation in Sri Lanka.

Eknelygoda’s disappearance and his wife’s efforts on his behalf have been widely reported in Sri Lankan and international media.
