Since demonstrations broke out in Yemen more than half a year ago, the country's media has been under pressure while covering the ongoing conflict between forces loyal to President Saleh and the demonstrators calling for his resignation. But at the centre of the demonstrations in Change Square in Sana'a, journalists and demonstrators are becoming increasingly organised with improved resources and training in basic rights.
Training several hundred journalists and citizens in the media's and demonstrators' rights, the IMS-supported Yemen Parliamentarians Against Corruption have worked towards peaceful and constructive problem-solving in the camp. A local trainer said:
- Before the training people did not know what they were allowed to do and there were a lot of confrontations and beatings. After the training this stopped and people started talking instead and solving the problems peacefully.
With established opposition parties joining the revolution for change, the demonstrators' camp on Change Square has been transformed into a small community with hospital facilities, food delivery, sports and other activities for youth, training centers, latrines and garbage facilities.
According to IMS' Media Expert in Sana'a Antti Kuusi, some tents are equipped with electricity, internet and TV, giving the demonstrators access to much-needed information from the otherwise struggling press:
- "The camp in Change Square seems to be running smoothly despite threats from the government and groups loyal to President Saleh to tear down the camp by force. For the time being it looks like people are prepared for a long stay on Change Square", reports Antti Kuusi.
