As the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has approved the programme proposal for the third phase of IMS Regional Media Programme for The Arab World and Iran, the Arab team in IMS prepares to take on another two years of cooperation with media partners in the Arab world.
The new programme phase covers 2009-2011 and will include three focus areas: 1) enhancing media freedom; 2) improving media standards and 3) connecting media workers.
Within this framework, IMS runs six projects that include: Media monitoring through and with the Arab Working Group, cooperation with media associations and unions in collaboration with the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ); Arab Reporters for investigative Journalism (ARIJ); Collaboration between public broadcasters; documentary film and finally collaboration between media workers - in the IMS terminology called "twinning".
- I'm pleased that we will be able to continue the collaboration with our partners and to carry on with our activities. This is a testimony to the results we have achieved so far as well as to the potential that this program carries, says Thora Gehl, programme coordinator of the Media and Dialogue Unit, who is responsible for the Regional Media Programme in IMS.

Since its inception in 2005, the Regional Media Programme has built professional relations nationally as well as regionally and internationally to address challenges facing the media sector in the Arab world.
The regional media program also seeks to foster greater intercultural understanding through professional collaboration between media professionals in the Arab region and Denmark based on common professional interests challenges and ambitions.
Between December 2008 and March 2009, the regional media programme underwent an all-encompassing review carried out by external evaluators. The review applauded, among others, that IMS had managed successfully to navigate in the difficult and sometimes turbulent waters of the Arab world with the particular focus on media freedoms. Furthermore, the review concluded, IMS had "effectively managed to engage in crucial activities that allow for long-term and politically legitimate engagement while at the same time work to gradually expand the boundaries of media freedom and free expression".
The new programme is based on the lessons learnt in previous programme phases as well as the recommendations set forth in the review. In the next phase there will be more flexible funds for upcoming media issues. At the same time, IMS will increase focus on monitoring results and developing relevant indicators of success.
