SCOOP - investigative reporting in Eastern Europe and the Caucasus

Investigative reporters are the watchdogs of society. In Eastern and south-eastern Europe investigative reporters get support from SCOOP, a network and support structure established by IMS in cooperation with local journalists and FUJ in 2003. Direct support in the form of coaching and financial support enable the journalists to carry out in-depth investigations and bring the results forward to the public. SCOOP extends to numerous countries in the region thereby connecting investigative journalists in the region as well as globally.

During the Global Conference on Investigative Journalism in Lillehammer, Norway between 10-14 September 2008, the steering committee of the global conferences appointed Kyiv to host the global conference in 2011. The practical arrangements will be carried out by journalists and international counterparts within the SCOOP network in close collaboration with media organisations in Ukraine.

In 2010, the Swiss city of Geneva will host the next Global Conference on Investigative Journalism, thus making Kyiv the seventh host after Copenhagen (2001 and 2003), Amsterdam (2005), Toronto (2007), Lillehammer (2008) and Geneva set for April 2010.

As 2011 will mark the 25th anniversary of the worst nuclear disaster in the world, namely the exlosion on 26 April 1986 of Reactor Four in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in ukraine, the organising committee behind the 2011 conference has decided to dedicate one track of sessions to reporting on nuclear and health issues. This will include a field trip to the site of the power plant north of Kyiv. Other tracks in the Global Conference on Investigative Journalism 2011 will include "investigative reporting in transition countries" as well as "best investigative practice in the world".

The Global Conference on Investigative Journalism 2011 in Kyiv will be bilingual. All sessions, panels and workshops will be conducted in English as well as Russian.
