Inspired by the pro-democracy protests in other parts of the Arab world, demonstrators have filled Bahrain's streets for the past months and have been met with violent crackdowns by the Bahraini authorities.
Highlighting the seriousness of the Bahraini authorities' response to the demonstrations and concern for the situation of human rights in general in Bahrain, is the lifetime sentencing of prominent human rights defender and longtime IMS partner in the Arab Working Group, Abdulhadi Alkhawaja. Mr. Alkhawadi stands accused of plotting to overthrow the regime after he participated in demonstrations earlier this year and was arrested on 8 April. The appeal verdict in Alkhawaja's case is due on 28 September where he is facing a life sentence.
Nabeel Rajab, Director of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, in Copenhagen this week to appeal to the Danish government to support the case of Danish citizen Alkhawaja, will be speaking together with Maryam Abdulhadi Alkhawaja, daughter of the accused Abdulhadi Alkhawaja and deputy in the Bahraini human rights defender.
The seminar takes place at the Danish Institute for International Studies, Strandgade 71, 1401 Kbh. K. in Copenhagen from 13.00-15.00 on Thursday, 29 September. Participation is free, but registration is required.
