Azerbaijan

Difficult professional and economic conditions, especially for print media, challenge the media sector in Azerbaijan. A variety of media organizations and media outlets exist, however only a few independent newspapers manage to publish newspapers of limited circulation. The national broadcast media are better developed, with more advertisement funds available as most Azeris rely on television for information and entertainment. IMS is working to support the media sector in Azerbaijan by strengthening the professionalism, as well as providing a platform for cross-sectoral media development.

Telling their stories through images of their city, aspiring Azerbaijani photo journalists recently took part in a master class on press photography organised by the IMS-supported Azerbaijan Media Center

By Seymur Kazimov

As part of their training by renowned Danish press photographer Tine Harden and locally famous photo reporter Abbas Atilay, the aspiring press photographers captured everything from the narrow streets of the capital Baku to Porsches on broad Azerbaijani boulevards.

A growing need for photo journalism training

With 15 carefully chosen participants Abbas Atilay highlighted the training's popularity among applicants:

- "We received lots of applications for this training. Every Baku-based photographer demonstrated interest so we had to select the 15 best ones. We need more of this type of training to meet a growing need for photo journalism classes."

Facilitating the course was long-time Danish press photographer Tine Harden who said the photography students worked "very hard":

- "It was a pleasure to see that some of the participants grew a lot and seemed to understand much more what it is to be a photographer."

Freelance photographer Elmar Mustafazadeh was one of the pleased participants:

- "I liked the way the training was organised, especially the fact that we were offered an opportunity to work independently. Tine's tips and recommendations were very important for us."

The best of Tine Harden's and the aspiring press photographers' work will be on display at Azerbaijan Media Center in early autumn this year.
