Maldives

A vibrant media community is developing in the Maldives following the reform process launched in 2005. However, the implementation of planned reforms is slow and there are continued examples of harassments and intimidation of the media. IMS is actively supporting the freedom of expression agenda in the Maldives, through participation in the International Press Freedom and Freedom of Expression Mission and support to local activities.

The report "The Maldivian digital communications environment: Freedom of expression and the media, telecommunications and IT sectors" (2009) provides an overview and assessment of the rapidly developing ICT sector in the Maldives. The report is based on the findings from an international mission to the Maldives in October 2009.

From 3 to 7 May 2006, the International Press Freedom Mission - an independent group of international organisations working to promote international standards on press freedom and freedom of expression - undertook a fact-finding mission to the Maldives. The Mission found clear examples of harassment, intimidation and attacks against media practitioners and dissenting voices in the country. However, the Mission also observed the opening up of the freedom of expression space and a growth in independent media over the past 18 months.
