Covering the Arab Spring: Middle East in the Media – Media in the Middle East

International conference, September 1-2, 2011 at University of Copenhagen

Media played an important role in the Arab Spring, keeping people informed about events both nationally and internationally and it was also a major catalyst and tool for those demonstrating in different Arab cities. Social media were used for mobilisation, organisation and information, while conventional media played a part in informing broader national and international publics about events. The struggle for media representation has thus been an central part of the protestors' struggle for national and international support.

The main objective of this conference is to shed light on the role of different types of media in the political unrests in the Arab region and to investigate the media descriptions of these events.

The conference seeks to bring together scholars from various disciplines to exchange descriptions and analyses of the coverage of the events in Arab countries that have been referred to as the Arab Spring.

It aims to contribute to research on media and opinion formation as well as on media and area studies. It gives a forum to connect research on media in the Middle East and the perception of Islam in Europe.

The conference is organised by the Centre for European Islamic Thought, The New Islamic Public Sphere Programme at Copenhagen University, International Media Support and Forum for Islam Research.

The conference is free of charge and open for all. Registration is not necessary, but we have limited seatings. There will be a number of seats reserved for members of the press.

Conference conveners:

Ehab Galaal, The New Islamic Public Sphere Programme
Riem Spielhaus, Centre for European Islamic Thought
Nina Grønlykke Mollerup, International Media Support
