Media in turmoil: An assessment of the media sector in Yemen

In a year of major changes in the Arab world, Yemen has witnessed its share of turmoil in 2011. In addition to the long-standing tension and fragmentation along regional and tribal lines, the past year has seen unrest and mass protests against the 33-year rule of President Saleh. In light of the recent instability, International Media Support (IMS) carried out a mission to the country in December 2011. The aim of the mission was to assess the overall situation of Yemeni media and their needs and challenges in the period ahead. This report presents the findings of the IMS mission.

The report, "Justice Denied in Bahrain: Freedom of Expression and Assembly Curtailed", outlines violations of human rights related to the authorities' handling of protests and demonstrations in the country since February 2011.  The report details meetings with human rights defenders, lawyers, writers, artists, journalists, government officials and foreign diplomats and provides insight into how the government continues to punish and prosecute individuals for expressing their opinions and protesting ongoing repression.

After Tunisian president Ben Ali was forced to step down in January 2011 newfound freedom of expression and new possibilities for independent media followed quickly.
